In this course we will learn about pruning an apple tree through demonstration and hands-on experience at Root Cause Farm in Fairview. We will discuss factors that influence the health and productivity of an apple tree including soil, water, sunlight and air flow. The class will include a demonstration of tree pruning and plenty of hands-on practice for participants.
Course Objectives
Observe different approaches to pruning
Identify dead and diseased apple wood
Identify a water sprout or sucker
Practice using all of the senses to engage with a tree
Practice cutting branches to promote proper healing around the cut
Practice cutting branches to promote flow of air and light through the tree
What to bring
Sturdy shoes and work clothing
Water bottle and nutritious snacks
Sharp loppers, hand saws or hand pruners if you have them (some tools will be available onsite for use during the class)

Instructor Bio
David Hamilton was born into a family and community in Fairview that has stewarded orchards in Fairview for about 100 years. David’s grandfather considered himself an orchardist and passed on a love of apple trees to his children and grandchildren. In 2020 David returned to the mountains from the Piedmont of NC and began to care for some trees in the family orchard and in the surrounding community. David is committed to learning about health and how humans can take good care of ourselves and the places we inhabit.
Students will be required to sign a liability waiver.
